Comparable titles
Choosing comparable titles that genuinely help
Comparable titles are a positioning tool, not a compliment. The most useful ones are recent, relevant and read by the audience you want.

Why comparable titles matter
Comparable titles help readers, booksellers and recommendation systems place a book. They answer the question: if I enjoyed that, will I enjoy this?
What makes a comparison useful
Useful comparisons share audience, tone and promise, not just subject. They are usually reasonably recent, so they reflect current reader expectations, and well-known enough within the genre to mean something to its readers without being so famous that the comparison feels unrealistic.
Comparing a book only to the best-known titles in its genre often says less than comparing it to books its readers are currently choosing.
Comparable titles as research evidence
Studying how comparable books are described, categorised and discussed by readers reveals the conventions of a shelf. It does not reveal their sales, and it should not be read as a forecast for your book.
